Shure SM58 as a kick drum mic?
Is it okay to use a Shure SM58 as a mic for a kick drum? Or will this blow the mic? I know it won't pick up the low freq's very well, but will this harm the mic or any other hardware in a basic home studio setup?
Sounds like you already know a little something about the SM58. It won't hurt the mic, but you are correct that it also will not reproduce the low freqs. Before I started triggering I used an AKG D112 in the bass drum for the low stuff and an SM58 placed right up against the batter head on the outside for attack. With the right EQ you can get a pretty good sound out of the SM58, just don't place it too close to the batter head or you will get too much attack. Still won't hurt it though. Just a side note, if you have an SM57 it will sound better in my opinion.
